Recently-relegated Southport came from behind to defeat 10-man Bradford Park Avenue in the second game of the season.

Avenue opened the scoring after just 10 minutes, Adam Boyes netting his second in two games on the end of a flowing move down the Bradford right.

However Southport were gifted an equaliser as some poor defending allowed Andy White to rifle home just before the half-hour.

After half time came the game’s turning point as the hosts were reduced to 10 men, Javan Vidal shown a straight red card for a two-footed lunge on goalscorer White.

Then in the last minute of normal time, Southport exploited the space and created the winner as Yves Zama’s cross found Gary Roberts, who hammered home from eight yards out.

Avenue began the game in promising fashion as the visiting defence looked fragile, and they took advantage of that when opening the scoring on 10 minutes.

It was a good move down the right flank between Wayne Brooksby and Nicky Boshell, before Vidal was played in behind. He fired in a low cross which eventually made its way through to Boyes, the clinical striker making no mistake from six yards to put Bradford in front.

The home side continued to push on a worried-looking Southport back three as Boyes and Oli Johnson both saw efforts blocked.

However just before the half hour, visiting ‘Port suddenly came to life, some good play forcing a corner which should have been nodded home, Dom Smith’s effort somehow ending up in the arms of Steven Drench.

However moments later they did equalise as Drench fumbled at the feet of an attacker and his defence only half-cleared straight into the path of White, who thundered home from 18 yards out.

Avenue had the next chance of note though, as Brooksby went on a good run before seeing his left-footed effort deflect agonisingly wide of the upright with vivsiting stopper Iain Turner stranded.

Drench was then at his best as Roberts showed excellent feet before belting a shot towards the bottom corner which the Avenue goalkeeper kept out with very smart reflexes.

From there Avenue broke and were left extremely aggrieved as Boyes knocked the ball past centre back Curtis Jones, who duly pulled him back and was arguably the last man.

The referee ignored any advantage, much to the Bradford players’ dismay, yet proceeded not to punish the offender Jones.

From the resulting free kick, Nicky Wroe’s delivery was headed as far as Matt Hill on the edge of the box, and the defender whistled an effort narrowly wide with Turner beaten.

Just after the break, Drench afforded Southport another chance when he lost the ball after rushing off his line, yet between a number of attackers they couldn’t get a shot away, and Hill put in a timely intervention to end the attack.

The Avenue goalkeeper was involved again 10 minutes later as Liam Martin headed Roberts’ cross towards the top corner, but Drench backpedalled and did well to tip over on the stretch.

And then just a minute later came the main talking point of the evening. Vidal went into a 50-50 challenge with studs showing and, despite winning the ball, there was no hesitation from the referee who went to his back pocket and sent the Avenue right back for an early bath.

Luca Havern was then counting his lucky stars as he slid in to cut out a low White cross, seeing the ball flash narrowly wide of Drench’s upright.

Then, in the 89th minute, the visitors made the extra man count as they found the winner.

The ball was worked out to substitute Zama in space on the right, and his low centre evaded everyone bar the late-arriving Roberts, his powerful effort proving just too hot to handle for Drench who got a strong hand to the ball on its way in.

Bradford attempted to rally and could have had a penalty as captain Wroe was the target of a chipped pass and received a shove in the back from a defender, but the referee waved away any appeals.

After one win and one defeat in their opening two games, Avenue now look to Saturday for their next three points as York City visit the Horsfall Stadium. A reminder to supporters that this is an all-ticket match.
