New Avenue man Luca Havern says he couldn’t turn down the chance to work with Mark Bower and Danny Boshell.

The defender joined the club from Telford last week after winning their Players’ Player of the Year award and spending the season as captain at the New Buck’s Head.

However he left Shropshire seeking a move closer to home, and says it is an opportunity he couldn’t pass up.

“I’ve known Bosh (Avenue assistant manager Boshell) for years,” Havern explained.

“I played with him at Stockport and at Altrincham, and having played against Mark’s teams on a number of occasions, they are guys I’ve known for a while.

“I had a good time at Telford but I wanted to come back up north, and when Bosh rang me it was an opportunity I really couldn’t turn down.”

Havern became the fourth new player to move to the Horsfall this summer, and he said he isn’t surprised at the talent being brought to the club.

“People know what the management here are about, and that will attract good players to the club,” he stated.

“Playing against their teams is always tough, but they play football the right way and they’ve been successful at this level.

“The calibre of the signings they have made so far doesn’t surprise me, and I’m glad to be a part of it.

“Hopefully now myself and the other new lads can settle in straight away and carry on the form that the club had in the second half of last season.

“I know we will all have targets in our heads but, first things first, we want to get off to a good start and carry on from where the club left off last season.

“It was a great run of form that the club had, and at Telford we were always looking over our shoulders even though at one point Bradford were 15 points behind us.

“But the main aim now is to have a good pre-season, get off to a good start and see where it takes us.”

Havern spent four years at Altrincham prior to last season, and has won promotion from the National League North twice in his career.

“I’ve been around non league for a fair few years now, so hopefully I can bring that experience to the club,” the 28-year-old said.

“I like to play football, I’d say I’m a ball-playing centre half really and I know that will fit in here.

“I know the manager likes to get the ball down and play and that’s what I’m all about.

“But ultimately I am a defender and I like to keep clean sheets, so although I do like to play, I’m not afraid to get stuck in when I need to.”

After signing on the dotted line, Havern took the time out to promote Avenue’s excellent Season Ticket offers, and supporters can purchase theirs now.
