Bradford Park Avenue’s under-19s got off to an excellent start to the season with a 6-2 win over Steeton in the Northern U19 Alliance League.

Taking control of the match from the word go, Alex Meechan’s men took the lead inside 15 minutes as a good run from Bradley Oliver saw him find Jordan Botwood who found the net with a powerful, accurate finish.

And just after the half-hour, Bradford had a second as a corner from the left dropped in the six-yard box and Oliver pounced to grab a goal for himself.

However Steeton pulled one back immediately as they took advantage of a defensive error and Ben Clarkson fired into the bottom corner.

Botwood then attempted to return the favour for Oliver as he did well before delivering a great cross from the right, which his strike partner just couldn’t get on the end of.

Just before half-time, goalkeeper Alfie Stevens-Neale was called into action, as some good skill saw a Steeton player get in behind but the stopper made a good save with his legs.

After the break, Avenue looked to extend their lead as Botwood and Oliver again combined, the latter seeing a shot smothered away by the visiting goalkeeper.

Botwood was brought off soon after and it wasn’t long before his replacement, Callum West, was celebrating as he scored with his first touch, finishing well from Andre Tavernier’s cross.

West then claimed an assist as he took advantage of a mistake to find Oliver who showed good composure to grab his second of the game.

Right-back Ryan Hall was having an excellent game and could have had an assist himself, but his cross just evaded West and Tavernier.

Steeton however grabbed the next goal, Clarkson converting his second after being found by an excellent pass.

Stevens-Neale made another very good save at his near post, keeping out a powerful shot from the edge of the area which looked destined for the bottom corner.

Into the final few minutes and Bradford were really stretching their opposition, finding a fifth when an excellent pass from Lewis Johnson found Tavernier who cleverly went round the keeper and finished.

And Johnson was again the creator in the final minute, albeit with less finesse as his long clearance played in West who finished with an excellent 30-yard lob to close the game in style.

Next up for the Academy is a match against Eccleshill United next Monday evening, with the venue to be confirmed.
